September 2005

Sunday (18 Sept.)

Slowly the world starts getting some colour. The sun is not above the
horizon yet, but it will be soon. Although the wooden hut where I slept
was not really well isolated it wasn’t a cold night and I’m eager to
get out of my sleeping back and enjoy the fresh morning air. Ten
minutes later I’m already of the golf course where the hut was located
and sit down near the edge of the cliff. Below me the waves rhytmically
crash into the shore. The tide is at it’s highest now. For a moment I
consider my destination for today – I feel the need to move on. Then I
come back to my senses; it’s a beautiful morning with an almost
spotless blue sky and again a great view of the high-rising cliffs and
the sea below them. These are the wee hours of morning and at this
moment this spectacle exists only for me.

Saturday 17 of September

It’s very early morning as I’m sitting on top of my home for the
night, a concrete bunker located at top of a 40 meter cliff. Up
here I slowly get some warmth back into my bones, while staring at the
morning spectacle of the sun rising over the Northsea. At moments at
these life is very enjoyable and I just lay back while the sun is
getting warmer.

Sunday, 11th of September
It’s not far past dawn as our sailingboat arrives in Harwich. We
drop anchor while it starts raining. Andrew and Emma are going to get
some well deserved rest and he asks me what I’m going to do. Well – I’m
tired, but I’ve still got some energy left and I’m really eager to get
to Kingston upon Hull. After all, I promised Ruth that I’d be there on Friday and I
feel very guilty about being two days late already.

Well, I’ll just write the short story here, but suffice to say I’ve
had some very interesting experiences. Thursday I met some people from
a national radiostation and they broadcasted a couple of short
interviews with me! First it started with the subject of where I was
going – which was of course, hitchhiking to England! Then they gave me
a lift while keeping reporting on my progress. And there was quite some
progress! At the locks of IJmuiden I met two Brits, Andrew and Emma,
in their very small wooden boat. I thought the boat could never
make it across the sea.

Well, today, the 7th of September, I’ve still to arrange some
things like getting insured and such, but this
midday I’ll finally start with the real trip! I’ll
hitchhike to the city of IJmuiden where I’ll try something new -
hitchhiking by boat! I hope to catch a ride with a private boat and
experience a ‘real’ channel crossing. It’s Wednesday today and my
first plan is to be in Hull (UK) by Friday. It’s very
exciting to be finally taking off. I know I always get to my destiny
when hitchhiking, but how will this boat hitching work out?
